Greek “Pilos” Plastic Helmet, “God of War” Series

110.00

Material: ABS plastic, thickness 4-5 mm

Description:

A few centuries before the Roman conquest, the ancient Greeks adopted this simple helmet design. After the Corinthian or Chalcidian types, it may seem like Greek craftsmanship had declined. However, this wasn’t due to the skill of the artisans, but rather the demand — the city-state armies needed a simple solution that could mass-produce reasonably good helmets for their warriors. This is why the pilos became so popular in the 4th century BC.

The term “pilos” was used by the Greeks to describe a headpiece that dates back at least to the 8th century BC. Only three centuries later did it receive a bronze version for the army, becoming the standard head protection for soldiers. It was worn by archers, light infantry, and even cavalry — with the addition of cheek guards for mounted troops.

It is believed that the first polis to adopt this simple helmet en masse was Sparta, although this is just a theory.
