– One of the most popular and affordable models.
– When necessary, it could be pushed back onto the nape, causing the lower edge of the visor to form a brow guard over the face that protected it from vertical strikes, similar to the brim of a kettle hat.
– By the end of the 14th century, the bascinet lost its elongated pointed dome shape and became more spherical. Meanwhile, the side parts of the helmet shortened and raised upward, while the back side, conversely, elongated with a slight smooth curve.
– At the beginning of the 15th century, a slightly protruding reinforcing ridge appeared, and by 1500, an articulated tailpiece as well. This new helmet shape came to be known as a sallet.
– Early sallets strongly resembled a simple helmet that left the face open, though it featured an elongated tailpiece. Such sallets were intended mainly for common and lower-income infantrymen. As the helmet developed a more defined and comfortable shape, it gained immense popularity.
