Interesting fact: there was a bit of mysticism in the doctors ‘ outfit after all. It is believed that the design of the mask was inspired by images of the Egyptian god Thoth with a bird’s head. It was believed that the bird’s head protects against diseases.
In fact, the doctor’s costume wasn’t just a mask.
The unusual mask was a prototype of a modern respirator and was supposed to protect the doctor’s respiratory tract from “a disease-causing smell”. To do this, numerous well-smelling herbs were stuffed into the beak of the mask, which, among other things, helped a person to breathe in the stench of dead bodies. But the most important thing is that a filter was clogged into the tip of the nose, which was made from a swab soaked in vinegar.
This mask is essentially the first gas mask in history.
The very same protective suit with a mask appeared thanks to the efforts of the French doctor Charles de Lorme in 1619. Its development was the first in the history of mankind protective suit for working in dangerous conditions. In the aftermath, the doctors ‘ costume had an impact on world culture. The image of the gloomy “bird healers” people are far from science and healing immediately surrounded by a mystical halo.
