– Flemish Sugarloaf Great Helm—a highly recognizable helmet that provides near-total protection for the head, face, and neck.
– A wide eye slit and numerous breathing holes provide decent vision and ventilation.
– Sugarloaf helm—a late variation of the great helm.
– Similar in shape to its predecessor, it differs in having a pointed conical top that better glances off weapon strikes. According to reenactor estimates, the “sugarloaf” helm was actively used in the first half of the 14th century.
– The name “sugarloaf helm” was coined by American reenactors in the late 20th century. This term was first applied to define a specific type of “pot-shaped” helmet depicted on a Florentine bas-relief dating to 1320–1325.
– Metal parts that can be attributed to the sugarloaf helm have been excavated across Western Europe, but a complete helmet has never been found. Therefore, this helmet is known primarily from pictorial sources.
