– The Scythians inhabited the Northern Black Sea region and the Sea of Azov region in the 1st millennium BC. Originally, this was the name of only one tribe, which subjugated the population of this area and created a powerful union of tribes. The Scythians were both nomadic pastoralists and farmers. They settled down only in Crimea and on the Northern coast of the Black Sea.
– The headgear of the Scythians were pointed cone-shaped leather or felt hats that covered the back of the head and ears. They were tied under the chin. Men tied their hair with braid

For the first time in “frozen” graves, felt helmets were discovered – the headgear of horsemen warriors, well known from various kinds of images from Scythian toreutics and Persepolis bas-reliefs to coins of the first Arsacids.
– The very silhouette of the helmet was probably supposed to symbolize a bird and give “bird-like” features to those who wore them (let’s recall the Herodotus “gold-guarding griffins”).
– Wooden figures of horses and deer with ibex horns are placed on the helmets — spirit helpers embodying the upper, bright world, to which they possibly “flew away” after death.
– Among tribal chiefs, the finials differed in size and skill of depiction: a griffin with a deer’s head in its mouth is a truly royal symbol.
