– Umbo (Latin umbo “projection, bulge”) is a metal half-spherical or conical shaped cover plate, placed in the middle of a shield, protecting the warrior’s hand from blows penetrating the shield. Under the umbo there is often a handle by which the warrior holds the shield. It also acts as an decoration of the shield.
– The plastic shield boss can be used for manufacturing LARP padded shields and shields for HEMA.
– The plastic shield boss is lighter and more elastic than a steel one and using it on role-playing shields is safer than a steel shield boss. For greater safety, it can be pasted over with a softening material like EVA on top and get an even safer version of a LARP shield.
