The proverb “On the Senka and the hat” appeared, most likely, in those times when in Russia the hat more than any other item of clothing, testified to the belonging of a person to a particular class.
In pre-Petrine Russia, the cut of the caps was the same in all classes “that the king, that the dogman”. All the men wore hats of the same style and type – it was a cap that differed only in the material: fur, felt, wicker.
At the same time, men took off their hats only in church or at home, they could sit in them at royal and boyar meetings and even weddings. For men – it is an indicator of social status.
