Breastplate — a piece of plate armor that covers the front of the body. It appeared at the end of the XIV century and existed as long as armor was generally used. The breastplate and backplate make up parts of the cuirass, in some cases the breastplate was used separately.

The popularity in Germany of armor with a fluted surface and the desire to stand out among the often encountered “smooth” Milanese armor was the basis for the appearance of Gothic armor, some surfaces of which are forged with fluted-both to increase their impact resistance and for beauty.
