– The name of the helmet, according to the “Dictionary of the Spanish Language”, published by the Royal Spanish Academy, comes from morra — lit. “crown”, “top of the head”
– Appeared presumably in Spain at the beginning of the 16th century. It was part of the armor set of foot spearmen in the armies of most European countries, including the “regiments of the new order” of the Russian army of the 17th century. Later it became an element of the armor of the palace guards of European monarchs.
– Expensive morions were forged from a single piece of metal and, as a rule, were decorated with a complex etched ornament or engraving. Cheap ones were riveted together from several parts and were often covered with paint against corrosion.
– In colonial troops, it was used up until the beginning of the 18th century.
