Leather gloves were an integral attribute of the medieval costume. And not only medieval. Throughout almost all of history, they were used everywhere, as an element of both civilian and military costume.
Often rings and expensive signet rings were made with their wearing over gloves in mind.
Leather gloves in a civilian costume give it completeness and aristocracy. To the military costume, they add light protection of the hand from cuts and scratches, as well as greater control over the weapon due to the absence of sweat on the palm and possible sliding of the palm along the hilt.
Also, gloves prevent the formation of calluses on the palms during prolonged practice with polearms.
