Bracelets were of great importance in the life of a medieval man. For a Viking, a bracelet performed two main functions – it was evidence of entering adulthood, where the jarl presented him with a bracelet at a solemn meeting and assigned him a place in the community. Most children went through this ceremony between the ages of 10 and 13, but already fully understood what their functions would be in the future.
Also, the bracelet performed a completely utilitarian function of gathering the wide sleeve of the shirt on the wrist and allowing a person to work fully without rolling down the sleeves.
Similar traditions existed among Slavic peoples. Archaeologists consider bracelets to be the earliest Slavic jewelry known to us: they are found in hoards and during excavations of settlements dating from the 6th century.
The word “bracelet” came into our language from French. The ancient Slavs called a bracelet with the word “obruch”, that is, “that which embraces the hand” In French, by the way, “bracelet” comes from the word “bras” – “arm”; thus, the native Russian name was replaced by its exact calque, only foreign.
Similar bracelets were found in the burials of Celts, Sarmatians, Huns and Mongols.
