– A capotain (eng. capotain, capatain, copotain) is a high hat with narrow brims, conical shape like a sugar loaf, usually black or blue. The capotain was worn by men and women in England and northwestern Europe. Early models of capotains had a rounded crown, later it became flat.
– Contrary to popular belief, capotains never had buckles on the front, this myth was created in the 19th century.
– There is also an assumption that the capotain became the prototype of the top hat.
