Falchion Type 2 is probably the most frequently encountered type in pictorial sources. Like any other falchion, it has a large width in the first quarter of the blade to enhance the strike.
It is often written that the falchion was dull and heavy and could be used as a working tool or as a weapon in a drunken brawl. This myth stems from the fact that the falchion looks similar in appearance and combat qualities to the Great Knife and Messer. But it is precisely the Falchion that is a status weapon. Conyers Falchion definitely belonged to a knight, and in illustrations this weapon is usually shown in the hands of a knight or a prosperous foot soldier. Many late Falchions were very richly decorated and belonged to nobles. In particular, there is a very skillfully engraved and gilded sword from the 1560s in the Wallace Collection. This weapon is engraved with the personal coat of arms of Cosimo de’ Medici, Duke of Florence.
