– One of the most recognizable medieval helmets.
– It features angled brims that protect the face and neck from vertical and diagonal strikes. At the same time, the helmet does not restrict the view or hinder breathing.
– The comb on the dome provides additional structural rigidity and deflects most vertical strikes tangentially.
– Historians believe that the helmet in the shape of an iron cap or hat appeared in the first half of the 11th century in Europe, though it is possible it was known even earlier. – This helmet type likely originated as an adaptation of civilian fashion of that era, and the advantages of the “iron hat” brims were only later appreciated properly. In various European countries, they were named accordingly; for example, in France it was called a “chapel,” and in Italy a “capellino,” both translating to “hat.”
– By the 13th century, iron hats were already widespread across Medieval Europe.
– During assaults on fortifications and fortresses, these helmets served as protection against falling stones and logs, while the brims prevented boiling water, pitch, and oil from pouring down the neck.
