Montante – “espada de dos manos – a two-handed sword that gives an advantage. It is known from the Italian word ‘montare,’ meaning ‘to rise’; also because the montante exceeds the height of a person, or because it is wielded/used in high positions.” – Tesoro de la Lengua Castellana o Española dictionary, 1613.

Montante – “a large sword with long quillons, intended for use with both hands, used only by weapon masters to separate fencers who show excessive enthusiasm.”
