The literal translation of the name is a large, military or long knife.
It is a combat knife that has grown to the size of a sword. One of the most characteristic types of weapons of the Renaissance and modern times. Typical for a grandmaster is the absence of a scabbard, they were worn with an open blade in the ring of the belt. Combat knives were a simple, modest weapon, and it was preferred by the Landsknechts in the XV – early XVI century.
Despite its somewhat unusual shape, it is quite convenient and familiar to hold the grossmesser. The long handle allows you to hold it with different grips, and the pommel in the form of a bird’s head does not allow the hand to slip off the handle even with a weak grip.
The bracket on the guard gives additional protection to the hands from the enemy’s weapon slipping off your blade.
