The pouch features the recognizable color scheme of the religious Order of the Hospitallers, also known as the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem. Founded in the 12th century in Palestine, the order played a key role in the Crusades (1095–1272) to reclaim the Holy Land.

By the 13th century, the order had become universal, mirroring the church itself, and was divided into eight “tongues” (languages), representing the major feudal states of Europe. The knights retained the title “Hospitallers of St. John,” as well as their distinctive red mantle with a white, eight-pointed cross—symbolizing purity and the eight knightly virtues.
