– A traditional Scandinavian handbag on bars – a traditional element in both men’s and women’s costumes. Such a bag is a very convenient option for carrying large items that do not fit in a belt pouch. It can be thrown over the shoulder and will not interfere with you at the festival.
– The bars securely close and exclude the falling out of the contents of the bag even during the fastest running or deep bending.
– The largest number of bars comes from the harbor of Hedeby, where at least fourteen similar items were found. Their length ranges from 18.1–49.6 cm, thickness – 0.7–1.3 cm, width in the central part – 2.9–5.2 cm. The diameter of the holes at the ends is 0.7–1 cm. – Ash and maple served as material for their manufacture, in particular. At least two bars form a pair. Curved horn bars with holes at the ends found in the same place probably belong to the same type of items (Schietzel 2014: 265; Ulbricht 1978: Ill. 42.1-2). In general, the finds from Hedeby can be dated to the 9th-11th centuries.
– Due to the lack of fully preserved bags, currently in reconstruction there is a wide variety of versions made of fabric and leather. Usually short, often simplified, bars up to 30 cm long are used, less often – slightly longer ones. Bars over 40 cm are rarely found in reconstruction.
Bags are often decorated with embroidery and are used to store mobile phones, wallets, bowls, spoons and similar personal items. Simply put, in modern reconstruction, bags on bars are used as a fashion accessory with which the owner can show off to other participants of the festival.
