Grossmesser, Grossmeister, Kriegsmesser (ger. Großes Messer, Kriegsmesser, sometimes lange Messer, eng. Grossmeister) — literal translation: big, military or long knife. It represents a combat knife that has grown to the size of a sword. One of the very characteristic types of weapons of the Renaissance and modern times. Typical for the kriegsmesser is the absence of a scabbard; they were worn with an open blade in a baldric ring. Combat knives were simple, modest weapons, and landsknechts preferred to use them in the 15th – early 16th centuries.
Despite its somewhat unusual shape, holding a grossmesser is quite comfortable and familiar. The long handle allows you to hold it with different grips, and the bird-head-shaped pommel prevents the hand from slipping off the handle even with a weak grip.
The ring on the guard provides additional protection to the hands from the opponent’s weapon slipping off your blade.
