Bow from Hedeby

161.00

Wood – Ash.

Draw weight: 28 – 52 lbs.

During the excavation of the Danish monument of the “Viking Age” named Hedeby, a bow was found side by side with fragments of six bows, as well as numerous arrowheads.

A whole bow and fragments of five bows were made of yew, one piece of a bow was made of elm.
The whole bow had the following dimensions: length 191 cm, width 4.0×3.3 cm.
Due to the reductions in sapwood on the front side, the arc is now bent in the direction of the shot.

The back of the arc is perfectly polished. On the front side, on the contrary, there are visible bulges and protrusions that remain almost unchanged. The aesthetic aspect has given way to functional considerations. The protrusions on the tree don’t affect the performance of the arc. The protrusions on the tree are slightly rounded by polishing.
