Falchion type 2 is probably the most common type found on pictorial sources. Like any other falchion, it has a large width in the first quarter of the blade to enhance the impact.
It is often written that the falchion was blunt and heavy and could be used as a working tool or as a weapon in a drunken brawl. This myth comes from the fact that the falchion is similar in appearance and fighting qualities to a Large knife and Cleaver. But it is the Falchion that is the status weapon. The Cowniers falchion was definitely a knight’s, and the illustrations usually show the weapon in the hands of a knight or a successful infantryman. Many of the later Falchions were very richly decorated and belonged to nobles. In particular, there is a very elaborately engraved and gilded sword from the 1560s in the Wallace Collection (Wallace Collection). This weapon is engraved with the personal coat of arms of Cosimo de ‘ Medici, Duke of Florence.
